Photographs of well-known girls from the past, 1945

I know our parishioners will be interested in the above photographs which were kindly lent to me by Sally Campbell when I visited her niece and her husband, Margaret and Wylie Hamilton, at Bohuntine during the week.

These three girls, Margaret from Bohuntine, and Polly and Mary from Achluachrach, (also a fourth, Katie MacInnes,(Jasperson), who appears on   page 4) completed their training at Stirling Infirmary and became highly professional midwives. Mary continued her nursing until she met her husband, the late Pat Toal, and became mother of nine children, one of them Bishop Joseph, formerly bishop of Argyll and the Isles and now bishop of Motherwell.  Margaret continued her midwifery in Canada until her two daughters arrived, and Polly was senior midwife at the Belford Hospital, Fort William, for many years, and saw most of the Fort William and district babies born into the world during this time. Polly has a prodigious memory for all the children she helped deliver, and when she was a patient in the  hospital some time ago, she was deluged by these “babies” -  all now grown-up and  married with grandchildren, who had so much to thank her for all she did for them.
