They were aware of the promise that Our Lord made that he would send them his Holy Spirit to confirm and strengthen them in their faith. They were unsure what this meant, but the moment the Holy Spirit descended on them on that first Pentecost morning, they were changed men: they opened the doors and windows which had been closed to conceal them, and burst forth into the world to their evangelisation. In one day, over 3,000 were converted to the Christian faith — people from different countries with their own language, all heard and understood the Apostles message perfectly. And so began this great work which will never cease and will continue until the end of time.

Our Blessed Lady and the Holy Spirit

No one was closer to the Holy Spirit than Mary.At the Annunciation, the moment she agreed to be the mother of the Son of God — let it be done unto me according to thy word- the Holy Spirit descended on her and through his power the Word was made flesh in her womb.On Pentecost morning, Mary was there again, like a midwife, when the Holy Spirit came, and this time the Upper Room became another womb from which the Church was born, the new Body of Christ - Christ being the head and each of us by our baptism making up the rest of the body.

The Holy Spirit and ourselves

We also have a close association with the Holy Spirit. On the day of our baptism God the Father said to us, as he said to his Son, Jesus, at the river Jordan when he was being baptised by John. You are my beloved: daughter/son in whom I am well pleased. And the Holy Spirit descended upon us and we became new members of the body of Christ that was formed on Pentecost Sunday. Later we received the sacrament of Confirmation, the gift of the Spirit, which enriched us and strengthened us in our faith to face the secular world around us.

This amazing power of the Holy Spirit lies within us, very often  lying dormant,  if we do not cultivate a devotion to Him. That Spirit can change our lives if we but only allow him the opportunity and seek his help.

Personal gift of the Spirit

After the Vatican Council, there was a much greater emphasis on the Holy Spirit, which encouraged us to make more use of this rich source of grace and inspiration within us.

For those who have devotion to the Holy Spirit, they release an awesome power within themselves which can increase their love of God,  and allow Christ to live and act in them so that they can be Christ to others.

Before you ever make a decision, or try to solve a problem, take a few moments to put your life in the hands of the Holy Spirit with this short prayer

O guide our minds with  they blest light,

with love our hearts inflame
and with they strength which ne’er decays

Confirm our mortal frame

All glory to the Father be

With his co-equal Son

The same to thee great Paraclete

While endless ages run

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue of fire rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the spirit gave them

Immediately before Our Lord ascended into heaven, he gave these instructions to his Apostles: Go out and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. They went forth with joy to commence this great work given them by their Master, but shortly met with threats to their lives. They sought refuge in the one place they knew where they would be safe and close to Our Lord, the room where the Last Supper took place. Here they gathered round Our Lady who became the centre of unity, and gave them strength. They would have filled Out Lord’s command given weeks before - do this in memory of me—and celebrated mass in the presence of Mary, and received the very Body and Blood of Christ, the assurance of presence with them.
