We pray for these seven children who will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit in the
sacrament of Confirmation next Sunday that they may grow up strong and loyal to the faith
of their baptism in a world that is becoming ever more secular.
On the day of Pentecost, the Apostles were hidden in the room where the Last Supper had taken
place. Their enthusiasm to carry out the mission given to them by Our Lord on the day of his
Ascension: -Go out and teach all nations, baptising them, in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit - soon turned to fear because of persecution. They were gathered round
Mary, the mother of Jesus, and with her they prayed for the coming of the Holy Spirit promised by
Our Lord.
The calm of the morning was disturbed by the breath of God coming like the force of a gale and
burst into the room where the Apostles were, and came down on them in the form of tongues of
fire.
Fire has warmth, and this assured them of the warmth of the love of the Holy Spirit in their hearts. Fire also spreads, and this was to
give them courage to go out and spread the faith. They were also given the gift of tongues so that on Pentecost morning all the people
who heard them preach understood it in their own language, and 3,000 were converted to the Christian faith on that one day.
The Holy Spirit is a great power within us and brings to us his special graces. The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are:
Wisdom - desire for the things of God, and to direct our whole life and all our actions to His honour and glory
Understanding - enable us to know more clearly the mysteries of faith
Counsel - warns us of the deceits of the devil, and of the dangers to salvation
Fortitude - strengthens us to do the will of God in all things
Knowledge - enables us to discover the will of God in all things
Piety - love God as a Father, and obey Him because we love Him
Fear of the Lord - to have a dread of sin and of offending God who loves us so much
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your divine love..
