Pentecost Sunday
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together
in one place.
And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush
of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they
were sitting.
Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a
tongue of fire rested on each of them.
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to
speak in other languages, as the spirit gave them ability
Immediately before Our Lord ascended into heaven, he gave
these instructions to his Apostles:
Go out and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
They went forth with joy to commence this great work given
to them by their Master, but very shortly met with threats to
their life. They sought refuge in the one place they knew
where they would be safe and close to Our Lord, the room
where the Last Supper took place. Here they gathered round
Our Lady who became the centre of unity and gave them
strength. They would have filled the command given to them
only weeks before - do this in memory of me—and would
have celebrated mass in the presence of Mary, and received
the very Body and Blood of Christ and the assurance of his
presence with them.
They were aware of the promise that Our Lord made that
shortly he would send them his Holy Spirit who would
confirm and strengthen them in their faith. They were unsure
what this meant, but the moment the Holy Spirit descended on
them on that first Pentecost morning, they were changed men;
they opened the doors and windows which had been closed to
conceal them, and burst forth into the world to start their
evangelisation. In one day, over 3,000 were converted to the
