As the final hours of Our Lord’s life were drawing to a close, and he had the horror of his Passion and Death ahead of him, he
gathered his disciples for what was to be their last meal together on this earth. It was the feast of Passover, which every good Jew
celebrated—but this meal was to be special! At the beginning of the meal, Our Lord said to them: I have desired and desired, with
the greatest desire, to share this meal with you. As the traditional meal progressed, at one point it differed when Our Lord took the
bread and broke it and said: This is my body which will be given up for you, And then he took the cup and said over it: This is the
cup of my blood , the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for many for the remission of sins.
Do this in memory of me. They realised that the bread he was giving them, was not just bread, but was truly himself. They must
have remembered how earlier he told the people who followed him after the miracle of the loaves and fishes, and work for the bread
that doe not perish which would bring them eternal life. This was now being fulfilled as he gave them his body and blood under the
appearances of bread and wine.
