He became a  Tornado fighter pilot with the RAF, and after flying for 5 years was  diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 1989,  resulting in his flying  career ending with the RAF. In 2000 he regained the freedom to fly  in the USA as a licensed private pilot. Ever since then, he has been  supporting JDRF by breaking world records flying around the US. A  few years ago, he broke the existing record of landing in all 48  contiguous states of the USA by 33 hours and raised $27,000 for  Juvenile Diabetes.  Then he went on to complete "Diabetes World  Flight" in 2003, the first round-the-world flight by a pilot with type  1 diabetes. Since completing his world flight, Douglas has set five  world speed records and two transcontinental speed records in the  USA in the Diabetes World. Douglas currently works as an  Investment Specialist with Threadneedle Investment Management,  London. In 2003 he wrote a book: Dare to Dream: Flying  Solo  with Diabetes.  Douglas’s mother, Margaret, is a brilliant pianist and   accompanies many of the competitors at the annual Lochaber Music  Festival. She and her husband, David, must be very proud parents.
