Bishop Joseph’s 30th anniversary
Bishop Toals’s 30th anniversary in the priesthood was on Saturday, July 10th, and the 11.30 a,m, mass this Sunday will said in
thanksgiving for his priesthood and that God may bless and guide him in his pastoral concern for his diocese. He has worked
extremely hard these past 18 months since his consecration, visiting all the parishes and clergy, even travelling to South America to
spend a fortnight with Fr. Colin MacInnes to support his missionary work among the poor in Peru, and administering the sacrament
of Confirmation in all the parishes.
From his pastoral letter, which was issued last weekend, people in the diocese will know the latest costly and long overdue work he
has undertaken to renovate the Cathedral—attending to the damage caused by damp, installing a new heating system and rewiring
the building. He needs all our prayers and financial support, as the work in total will be in the region of £1 million.
The Cathedral is the responsibility of every parish!
How can we help the bishop to raise the necessary funding? Any ideas?
Pope Benedict’s Visit to Britain
From next Sunday, a prayer will be added to the Sunday Masses for Pope Benedict’s visit to the United Kingdom that it may bring
many graces and blessing, not only to the Church, but to the country in general. Lord Patten has said the reputation of Britain is at
stake. The Government are determined to make the visit a success for three reasons: 1) out of respect for the Pope, 2) to enhance the
reputation of the United Kingdom because the visit will be followed by millions of people around the world, and 3) because the
Church has an important role in development aid and social work. He said “this visit will put an end to any Catholic feeling that he
or she is a second-class citizen because of its historic nature as a state visit”
