After new year, the Scottish Hierarchy have their annual retreat at the Scots College, Salamanca, where Mgr Toal was their host  for a number of years, and also led the week’s retreat with a series of talks to the bishops.
This year, as a member of the hierarchy, he will be relieved of that responsibility which has been passed on to the new rector.
He will be received with great rejoicing by his many Spanish friends religious and lay, who are delighted that he was chosen to be the new bishop of Argyll and the Isles. The retreat will obviously limit his time, so he will not be able to visit as many of his friends as he would wish. Perhaps, he may have the opportunity to return at a later date and catch up with all his visits.
We hope he enjoys the rest after the busy few weeks  he has had since his ordination.
The bishop intends to visit all the parishes in the diocese, say mass at the weekends, and allow a few extra days to visit the sick and the schools. In this way he will meet most of the people and have time to talk with them.
He is intending to visit the Isles after Easter and work his way from Barra to Stornoway. He is well known in the Isles, where he was parish priest of Benbecula, and was very popular with the people..He was also involved in ecumenical
meetings and had very friendly relations with the clergy of other denominations. One of his special friends is Dr Adrian Varwell, Church of Scotland parish minister at Fort Augustus. He and his wife, Margaret, were present in the Cathedral for Bishop Toal’s ordination.
I myself, and the Catholics of Fort Augustus, are deeply grateful to Dr Varwell for his warmth and kindness in allowing us to use the Church of Scotland for funerals and have requiem mass.
He is an example to us all of true Christian love in his readiness to help everyone in any situation. Recently, he had the sad pastoral duty of attending to Sharon Fraser in her illness and conducting her funeral service at Invergarry, and gave great consolation to her loved ones.
