Sunday March 2nd. 2008 Mothering Sunday

We wish all mothers a very happy day.
Today, your husband and family recognise you for what you are—the most marvellous person in the world, as far as they are concerned—and rightly so. For your children, there is just no one like their mum!
Motherhood is a most precious and privileged gift from God to share in his creative
powers to bring new life into the world. It was deep within you that a human being
was created. Very quickly it started taking on its human form, and in a matter of
weeks its heart was beating, and within twelve weeks it was perfectly formed. All
it had to do now was grow bigger until it came to full term and was born. The excitement
and joy of waiting for a child to be born is something all parents have experienced.
Will it be a boy or a girl? Who will it look like? What name will we call our baby?
This child has been loved from the first moment its mother knew she was expecting
it, and that love is there to welcome it into the world and will follow it throughout
its life.
The wonder of creation never ceases when we look at a perfectly formed baby. How any one can refuse to believe in God when you see such perfection in so small human being!
What gifts and talents has God implanted in this child? They are there to be nurtured so that they may blossom forth an enrich the world.
Baptism is the first gift we ask for a child so that it becomes a son or daughter of God. This is the greatest dignity parents can give to their child.
