Holy Thursday Mass of the Last Supper 7.30 p.m.

With the deepest gratitude in our hearts, we gather on Thursday evening to thank Our Lord for his most precious gift to us of his own Body and Blood which was given on this night for the very first time during the celebration of the Pascal meal, the Last Supper, which was in reality the first mass.

It was on this night that our Lord ordained the first priests to ensure that the work he started would continue until the end of time. To them he gave the power to do what he had done: to change the bread and wine into his Body and Blood. After the Resurrection, he would give them the power to forgive sins in his name, and commission them to go out to preach the word of God, to baptise and administer the other sacraments.

St. Paul talks of God investing these powers in vessels of clay. No one is worthy of such a dignity, yet God needs young men to offer themselves for the priesthood that his work may continue. As we adore Our Lord in this Most Blessed Sacrament at mass on Holy Thursday, and renew our faith in his presence in the Eucharist, may we also pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood .

You may have read the article in last week’s Bulletin about the serious problem of  the lack of vocations to the priesthood and the religious life. We have only one student in the seminary at the moment, a late vocation who gave up his work to study for the priesthood. It could be ten years before another priest is ordained for the diocese if someone should apply now—but there are no applications!  So often in the past, the religious orders helped out by supplying priests to work in parishes, but they also are being affected by lack of vocations and have no one spare to send.

May we all pray earnestly at mass on Holy Thursday that, despite the attractions of the secular world, young men and women may still hear the voice of God calling them to serve him in the Church through the priesthood and religious life.
