The feast of the Ascension is the completion of our Lord's visible mission on this earth, when he returns to his Father in heaven.
The wonder of this feast is that for the very first time, our human nature, in the person of Jesus, has been taken up into heaven. This shows us the sacredness of our body and that we must treat it with the greatest reverence, for on the last day, our body too will rise again to be joined to our soul in heaven.
Of all humanity, Our Lady is the only other person who has been taken up body and soul into heaven. We honour this doctrine on the feast of her Assumption. Mary was sinless, so her body was not subjected to the corruption of the grave.
It needs no great theologian to understand that she, who is the mother of God incarnate, would not suffer the humiliation of the grave. Our Lord would want his mother to be with him in heaven.
Have you ever thought what that reunion of mother and Son in heaven must have been like?
Here was the woman who gave him his flesh and blood, who suckled him, loved him, cared for him, who was warned by Simeon in the temple that, because of this child, a sword of sorrow would pierce her heart, her exile in Egypt, and finally taking her place at the foot of the cross on Calvary. She was a devoted mother to her Son and what a reunion this must have been. For the first time Mary would have seen Jesus in all his glory, and he would now be able to show her the fullness of his love in return for all the love she had given him on this earth. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
